Some covers have far too much crammed onto them - straplines, reviews, quotes… Some, like this, give virtually nothing away. This shouldn’t work at all but, in fact, it’s instantly compelling and totally intriguing.
The title is impenetrable. It doesn’t even have the punctuation shown in all the online listings (Boxer, Beetle). Is this someone’s name? A random list of nouns? A type of beetle? The author is completely unknown, so no help there. The only clue to the book’s content is the 1930s propaganda poster style, suggesting a Nazi connection. And that’s it.
But the whole design is so utterly confident that it works beautifully. It makes you stop, wonder, then pick up the book or scroll down to read the listing. This type of approach only works if you forget about explanation and go for a combination of mystery and shout. In this case, the cover draws you in whether on a shelf or a screen. Lovely.
